Scoutrees 2014

In early 2014, 3rd Orleans Beaver and Cub Scouts started looking at the impact of the Emerald Ash Borer on Ottawa and Orleans. The Beaver and Cub Scouts decided to do something. The youth considered many approaches including (their ideas)
  • Going and crushing the Emerald Ash Borer;
  • Poisoning the Emerald Ash Borer;
  • Planting trees to replace trees impacted by the Emerald Ash Borer.

In the end, the youth chose to plant new trees as it was more practical. Beaver and Cub Scouts have started over 100 tree seeds which will turn to saplings for planting in the spring of 2015. On 3 May 2014, the Beaver and Cub Scouts planted 60 trees at Francois Dupont Park in Orleans.  Cub Scouts worked to choose:
  • Appropriate snacks for planting day (oranges, apples, water, chocolate chips and pretzels);
  • Appropriate equipment for planting day (shovels, string to mark off areas, carpet to keep weeds down, etc.);
  • At the site, they chose (based on tree characteristics), where to plant trees.
